American Doctors Immigrate To Israel on Wednesday http://www.israelnationalnews.com/news.php3?id=67040 August 9, 2004 Less than one year after the Arab terrorist murder of American-born Dr. David Applebaum, 15 US and Canadian physicians have decided to carry on his legacy by moving to Israel together with their families. The doctors and their families - scheduled to arrive on Wednesday - make up nearly 100 out of the 1,500 individuals making Aliyah this summer with the Nefesh b'Nefesh organization. Dr. Applebaum was murdered in a suicide bombing attack, together with his 20-year-old daughter Nava on the eve of her wedding, September 9, 2003, at Cafe Hillel in Jerusalem. Born in Chicago and educated in Cleveland, Dr. Applebaum immigrated to Israel in 1981. He served as director of Emergency Services at Jerusalem's Shaarei Zedek Hospital and founded the network of "Terem" emergency care centers. Nefesh B'Nefesh initiated a special program of aliyah for doctors in memory of the murdered physician. Preference was granted to doctors with expertise in emergency medicine. Applebaum Fellows on this summer's third Nefesh B'Nefesh-sponsored El Al flight include: an Emergency Room specialist, a surgeon, a pediatric nephrologist and pediatric gastroenterologist. Support for the Applebaum Fellowship branch of Nefesh B'nefesh's Aliyah campaign was initiated by Israel Seed Partners, a Jerusalem-based venture capital fund, supported by the United Israel Appeal of Canada. Dr. Jeremy Halberstadt, a pediatrics specialist who made Aliyah from Queens on this summer's first Nefesh b'Nefesh flight told IsraelNN's Ezra HaLevi about the legacy of Dr. Applebaum. "The greatest hope of physicians like myself who are arriving here is to be able to contribute to the Jewish people in the way Dr. Applebaum did," said Halberstadt. "I was involved with emergency care before I made Aliyah, and everyone would always tell me that I had to speak to Dr. Applebaum. One day we crossed paths in a hospital but I missed him and never did get to speak to him." Now Halberstadt, who lives in Ramat Beit Shemesh with his wife and five children, is becoming certified to practice in Israel and hopes to work at one of the famous Terem-emergency care centers founded by Dr. Applebaum. "The goal of these monsters who are attacking our people is to prevent us from coming here - but we are coming with our heads held high to help heal the Jewish people in our own land," Halberstadt said. The August 11 flight will be greeted with the fanfare that has become customary since Nefesh B'Nefesh began assisting mass Aliyah from North America. Cabinet Minister Natan Sharansky will greet the new olim (immigrants to Israel) at Ben Gurion Airport Wednesday morning. IsraelNationalRadio.com will be providing live on-the-scene coverage of the flight arrival from 1-3 AM (EDT), Wednesday.
