Email Tips
Software Packages
- If you have an Internet connection at home, you do not have to use the
email package supplied by the Internet service provider.
- Email packages popular in Israel are:
Microsoft Outlook, Netscape's Email, Eudora Light,
Pegasus (I use this)

- Most email packages have a spell checker - use it.
- Telephone lists or alias lists or nicknames save you time and help you avoid address mistakes.
- DO NOT give out your email password.
- If you have a dial-in account, read and write all email offline (to avoid wasting connect time).
- Do not open email attachments unless you are sure that the attachment
was sent to you by someone you know and they told you about it. Email virus messages are sent from am infected user's computer without him/here knowing it.
- Install a recent anti-virus program and keep it updated (I use Norton).
Writing Suggestions
- Think before you write.
- Make the subject count.
- Do not curse, SHOUT, or flame
- Keep your signatures short (up to 5-6 lines) - long signatures bother people.
- If you are sending personal email on a company account, put a disclaimer in the signature.
Sample Disclaimer: The opinions above are my own and do not represent my employer.
- Assume that your public messages may be forwarded to other people.
- Your written message can be saved and quoted.
- Before forwarded a "virus warning" check to see if it is a joke or hoax.

Mailing Suggestions
- If you get a message that has a long forwarded list, remove the list when you forward the email.
I get messages that are 3-4 lines but the header has dozens of email addresses and is 3-4 pages.
This bothers many people to the point that they may not read the message.
- If you are mailing a message to over 10 people, it would be a good idea to
use a hidden distribution list. This will allow each person to get your email without
seeing the whole list of everyone's email addressses.
People tend to dislike getting long headers.
Giving out your client or friend list is unwise.
(others can reply to everyone and abuse your list).
Pegasus mail (free) and others have hidden distribution lists.
If you do not know or want to learn about distribution lists, an easy substitute
would be to email the message to your own address and BCC (blind carbon copy) the
message to your list of addresses. All email packages have this feature.
Mailing Lists
- Stick to the group's subject
- Respect opinions that differ from yours.
- Avoid chain letters.
- The "good times virus" is a hoax.
- If you get too many individual messages from a list you can request the once a day digest.
- Listproc, Listserv and Majordomo are machines that accept list commands.
- You can find thousands of free email lists on virtually any topic
There are several databases on the Internet to search for them.
